The band's new album, On a Prowl(2023), is a nod to the 1980s glam rock era and features songs from classics such as “Magical Vagina” or “Pornstar” and “On Your Instagram” respectively. The album also reflects the band's evolution, with members performing in the 18th season of America's Got Talent. Despite not advancing to the finals, the band has been praised for its glam rock style and its ability to reach an audience previously unknown. The group promises a very little edited edited version of their stage version of the Audioin Sao Paulo show.

With dirty humor and eighties fantasy, the Californian group arrives in 2023 renewed with an album and participation in America’s Got Talent; to Rolling Stone Brasil, vocalist Michael Starr talks about what to expect from his show in São Paulo this Thursday (19)

Nostalgic lyrics and well-behaved appearances on TV: would that be the Steel Panther less profane? “Yes – there are definitely songs that are less vulgar, I guess is the word,” he says Michael Starr. “But there are also some f*cking dirty tracks there [risos].”

On video to Rolling Stone Brazilthe frontman of the Californian group looks like he’s been taken from a 1980s Scorpions or Guns ‘N Roses video – his long hair tied back by a red bandana and an animal print shirt help him explain, in part, how Steel Panther came to be the year 2023 alerts with its acidic and, at times, vulgar humor: the band lives its glam rock fantasy in essence.

The journey through the 1980s rocker imagination arrives in Brazil this Thursday (19). On the stage of Audioin São PauloStarr, Satchel (guitar), Stix Zadinia (drums) and Spyder (bass) bring, among classics, the songs from the brand new On a Prowl(2023), “one of our most epic albums”, guarantees the vocalist.

Composed during the pandemic and recorded in the members’ homes, the album shows signs of the quartet’s own evolution. While the poorly created debauchery doesn’t abandon them – let’s not let us lie on tracks like “Magical Vagina” or “Pornstar” -, the band adds other themes and feelings here, notably the nostalgia that has rocked them since their inception in 2000.

This is the case of “1987” – “a love letter to the year 1987” -, or “Teleporter”, strongly inspired by the confinement of the covid-19 pandemic (“it’s basically about being in a situation that you just want to get out of very quickly, you know?”).

In the mix of the new album, there is room for what Starr considers a punk rock scratch in “Sleeping on the Rollaway”. And for a very current (and Steel Panther-like) mockery of social media culture in “On Your Instagram”: “Why can’t you look like you do on your Instagram / The girl that I want to screw is on your Instagram” (“why don’t you look like what you post on Instagram? / the girl I want to f*ck is on your Instagram”).

Almost simultaneously with this unpretentious evolution of the group, Steel Panther gained an equally unexpected showcase, thanks to its participation in the 18th season of America’s Got Talent. With moderate adjustments to the lyrics for the television versions of tracks like “Death to All But Metal”, the quartet needed to exaggerate the glam performance even more.

And it worked. Even without advancing to the finals, they aroused sympathy among the public and also the jury, drawing praise from Howie Mandel, Heidi Klum, Sofia Vergara and even Simon Cowell: “I know it’s early in the season, but this has been my favorite show so far,” declared the unsmiling Cowell.

Participation provided a platform for Steel Panther to reach an audience previously unknown to them:

According to the vocalist, the effects were also felt in the sales of albums and tour tickets. “Sometimes we ask the public how many of them saw us on America’s Got Talent and it’s always something like 30%. So the tours are great, record sales are great, people have been watching our videos and now we’re in Brazil!”

Outside of TV, however, on the Audio stage this Thursday, Steel Panther promises a very little edited version of their show – no filter, if you ask us. Back in Brazil after five years (“I met so many hotties on my last visit, there are a lot of beautiful girls there”), the rockers bring the most celebrated tracks of On The Prowl, as well as even less well-behaved classics from all six of the band’s albums, such as “Glory Hole”, “Fat Girl” and “Community Property”. “It’s going to be a good rock experience! I don’t think people will forget this show.”
