The miniseries will be filming at locations in São Paulo (Senna’s birthplace) and Angra dos Reis, Rio de Janeiro in Brazil.
Vicente Amorim is helming the show as showrunner and director. Julia Rezende will also be on board as co-director. The series is produced by Gullane in partnership with Senna Brands and Ayrton Senna’s family.
Vincente had put out statement last year about his goals for the series. He had shared, “I’ve had many idols in the sport, but only one hero, Senna. I watched his races, I rooted for him, I was inspired by him and I was in tears the day he died.”
The filmmaker added, “Senna was an international hero and through Netflix a series about him will have global reach – it will be an international series, produced and directed by Brazilians, that will move the home crowd and tell Senna’s fantastic story to new audiences and old fans all over the world.”
The six-episode miniseries will look at the late car driver’s life, including his personal relationships. Senna will also focus on the Formula 1 champion’s journey on tour, beginning from his start in England to his fatal and tragic car accident in Italy at the San Marino Grand Prix in 1994.
Latin American actor Gabriel Leone landed the role of Senna in March 2023. He is known for the projects Dom, Duetto, Dark Days and Velho chico. After his casting announcement, the actor had said, “It is a huge responsibility and also a great honor to be able to represent an icon who inspired so many people throughout his life, showing the world Brazilian sporting talent. Knowing that we will bring this story to millions of people in so many countries, through Netflix, inspires me to see this as one of the great roles of my career.”
